The small dog is rushed to the Manhattan Animal Medical Center where the emergency vet on duty is Dr. Tory Waxman. As the puppy recovers, the scruffy terrier-and-something-else captures Dr. Tory’s heart. When they weren’t able to find her parents, Dr. Tory names her Mabel and brings her home as her own.

As Mabel recovers, Dr. Tory and her husband Michael notice a clear link between her food, energy, and digestion. Traditional dog foods provide the bare minimum nutrition and leave Mabel sluggish—with awful poops. Home-cooked meals bring her back to life, but leave Michael and Dr. Tory exhausted. They know there has to be a better way to feed Mabel fresh, high-quality food.

Michael, a software engineer who grew up in a house full of dogs, realizes their struggle with Mabel’s diet isn’t unique. He and Tory set out to create food as nutritious as home-cooked meals, but without the extra time and effort. That’s how Sundays for Dogs was born.

Dr. Tory knows most dog food relies on synthetic vitamins to

replace nutrients lost in high-heat cooking. To her, it feels like feeding dogs only fast food and hoping a multivitamin will make up for it.

When dog food manufacturers tell them a naturally complete and balanced recipe isn’t possible, Michael and Dr. Tory set out to prove them wrong. With the right team of veterinary nutritionists, human-grade kitchens, and two years of testing over 17 versions, they craft the fresh dog food of their dreams.

By early 2020, Sundays is ready to launch with a naturally complete and balanced recipe. Then COVID hits, and key ingredients become nearly impossible to find. Michael and Dr. Tory wonder if it’s time to walk away.

Even as supply chains stall, early customers start seeing real changes in their dogs—more energy, smaller poops, happier pups. Word spreads quickly about the difference Sundays makes and that dogs really love the taste. So, Michael and Dr. Tory get scrappy—finding creative ways to source top-quality ingredients, like USDA-grade beef—and keep going.

What starts as one thoughtfully crafted Beef Recipe grows into a full lineup—lean All-Natural Chicken, then limited-ingredient All-Natural Turkey—so every pup can find the food that helps them thrive.

Because for us, it’s never just about feeding dogs. It’s about giving them more good years—more walks, more naps in the sun, more time with you. Today, we craft our recipes in USDA-monitored, human-grade kitchens across the U.S., all with one goal: helping every family give their dog a longer, healthier, happier life.

While working on our Beef Recipe, Michael and Dr. Tory noticed Mabel could sense when Sunday was near. Sundays was the day focused on spending quality time together—and Mabel knew it meant she'd have their undivided attention. It’s our nod to putting a little of that Sunday energy in everyday.

Mabel’s role in the Sundays story isn’t just inspirational; it’s practical, too. Mabel (along with her dog siblings Sky and Keeley) taste test every recipe in development and every new batch of Sundays before it’s released to customers. If Mabel doesn’t love it, it’s back to the drawing board.
